Nearer Home…

The wind
Was a drone
A base
Backdrop

A hum
Far off
Away

And where is the love
Once lit those eyes?
Fear now
Has its say

And tears turn thirsty
Dirt,
Dark, into mud

At the feet of the fighter
And his trembling love’s

Eyes like clouds
In sorrow’s spring

To winter’s dust,
Showers bring…

He turns away
And as he goes

Her hardship-hardened
Heart- hurt
Knows

He may not return
The same
Next fall.
Nay,
He may not return,
At all.

At…
All.

She sees him now-
Naught but a speck-
One with the horizon
So they say
Her evening turns
Twilight to black
And tears lift the latch
To close
This day.

………..

Profound perhaps
Or foolish?
Floating home
Grasping…
Scraps of memory,

These words-
Love written?
Scribbled.
Shadows,
And the thoughts
Flick’ring behind them?

Ahhhh! Misery.

His eyes, closed.
His grief- prayer
Unspoken

And from his sleep
A touch, a gentle touch,
Awoke him.

Upon his cheek
A finger slid?
(How could it be?)
He cracks a lid.

No finger there,
No lover’s hand.

In spite of all,
His hopes demand…

Yet,
Still it is naught
But a salt-laden tear.

No
Comfort
But war
Found it
No friend, but fear…

Death?

And as it rolls
His heart wells up.
A souldrop falls, and
He drinks
That
Cup

Ahhhh! Misery…

For to be alone,
Yes,
Is
To be
Alone,

But to be
Away from home??

Ahhhh! Misery,

Unknown!

Feels
The forever-now
Alone.

Nay!
Not so,
New tears
Fall now
Nearer home.
